Water leaking from a Nivona machine — symptoms and first steps

A water leak is one of the most common faults that bring Nivona CafeRomatica coffee machines to our workshop. The signs vary: a puddle under the machine, a damp drip tray even after it was emptied recently, drops falling from the lower part of the housing, or even steam escaping from the sides while coffee is brewing. Whether the leak started suddenly or has been getting worse, it needs a quick response. Water that reaches the electronics of a Nivona machine can cause much more serious damage.

Before you book a service visit, run a few simple checks. Make sure the water tank is seated correctly and that its seal is not coated with limescale. Check that the drip tray is not overfull — on Nivona machines in the 5xx and 6xx series the overflow sensor often becomes unreliable after longer use. Note where the water is coming from: the front, the rear, or the bottom. That detail speeds up workshop diagnosis considerably.

The most common causes of a water leak on Nivona machines

Brewing unit seals — O-rings

The most common cause of a leak on Nivona CafeRomatica machines is worn or hardened O-ring seals in the brewing unit. On a Nivona the brewing unit is a removable part — the user should take it out and clean it regularly. Silicone seals lose their elasticity over time under hot water, coffee oil and cleaning agents. On the Nivona CafeRomatica 520 and 670 the problem usually shows up after 2-3 years of heavy use, and on the 756 and 790, which use stronger components, a little later.

Worn O-rings mean water leaking straight from around the brewing unit, often visible once the unit is removed. At AGD Group we replace the full set of brewing unit seals, lubricate them with a special silicone grease and set the sealing pressure — the whole job takes about 30-40 minutes.

Cracked or leaking water tank

The water tank on Nivona machines is made of plastic, which can develop micro-cracks over the years. The points where the tank meets the drain valve, and the area around the handle, are especially at risk. On the CafeRomatica 820 and later models the tank has an extra filter, and the filter socket is another common source of a leak. A cracked tank cannot be repaired — it has to be replaced with a new part.

Leaking thermoblock

The thermoblock (flow-through boiler) is the heart of the heating system in every Nivona machine. Over time, and without regular descaling, limescale builds up inside the thermoblock and can damage the internal seals. A thermoblock leak shows as water dripping from the rear or the bottom of the machine, often warmer than the water from the tank. On the CafeRomatica 756 and 790 the thermoblock is aluminium, so aggressive water (high hardness) speeds up corrosion of its inner walls.

Damaged silicone hoses at the connectors

The hydraulic system of a Nivona machine is made up of dozens of silicone hoses that link the pump, the thermoblock, the brewing unit and the nozzles. The connectors on those hoses — especially where they meet metal parts — can start to leak over time. The causes are natural ageing of the silicone and vibration from the pump while it is running. This fault is particularly common on older Nivona CafeRomatica 520 models, where the hydraulic layout is more complex.

Corrosion after a flood

An accidental flood of the machine (for example an overfilled tank, or a failure of the Spumatore system) leads to corrosion of metal connectors and internal parts. The leak may appear only weeks after the incident, once corrosion has broken the seal of the joints.

Where to look for a leak on individual Nivona models

The Nivona CafeRomatica 520 and 670 have a simpler hydraulic layout, but the O-rings in the brewing unit wear out faster because the seals are thinner. The CafeRomatica 756 has a thermoblock with a modified sensor — a leak in that area usually means a sensor problem, not a boiler problem. The Nivona CafeRomatica 790 and 820 are dual-circuit machines — the fault can sit on the coffee circuit or the milk circuit (Spumatore), so diagnosis has to be precise.

Finding the leak yourself — where to look

Before you come to the workshop, try to locate the source of the leak yourself. Place a white paper towel under the machine and brew 2-3 coffees. Then check:

  • Water at the front — almost certainly a problem with the brewing unit or the drip tray
  • Water at the rear — a leaking thermoblock or hose connectors at the pump
  • Water from underneath (the middle) — a cracked tank or a leaking tank valve
  • Steam from the sides — worn brewing unit seals or a leak in the brew chamber

If the leak appears only while coffee is brewing (under pressure), it is almost always the brewing unit seals. If water also drips after the machine is switched off, the cause is in the tanks or the valves.

Cost of repairing a leak on Nivona machines

At the AGD Group workshop in Lodz, leak repairs on Nivona CafeRomatica machines look like this:

  • Diagnostics — 70 PLN (included in the repair cost)
  • Brewing unit seal replacement — from 120 PLN (the most common repair)
  • Water tank replacement — from 150 PLN (depending on the model)
  • Thermoblock repair or replacement — from 250 PLN
  • Silicone connector and hose replacement — from 130 PLN

We give an exact quote after diagnosis. We do not start the repair without your approval.

The average leak repair on a Nivona machine costs from 180 PLN, depending on what has failed. Every repair comes with a 3-month service warranty.

Prevention — how to stop leaks

Regular descaling of a Nivona machine (every 2-3 months if you have hard water) is the foundation. Scale in the thermoblock and on the seals is the main reason they wear out quickly. It is also worth replacing the brewing unit seals every 2-3 years for peace of mind, cleaning the tank once a week, and lubricating the brewing unit with silicone grease every 200-300 coffees. A water filter (for example Nivona Claris) greatly extends the life of the thermoblock and reduces the risk of a leak.
