What is an empty circuit?
An empty circuit on a DeLonghi coffee machine means the appliance starts a brew cycle, but no coffee reaches the cup — or only plain water comes out. A second, equally annoying symptom is beans ground too finely, which restricts the water flow. It is one of the more frustrating faults: the machine seems to be running, but it is not doing the job it was built for. It affects both the ECAM range (Magnifica, Dinamica, Eletta) and older ESAM models.
Signs and symptoms
DeLonghi owners who report an empty circuit most often describe the following:
- the machine grinds the coffee, but no drink reaches the cup, or only water comes out,
- the pump runs loudly, yet the pressure is too low,
- the coffee in the grounds container is dry, or wet and watery,
- flow-error messages appear on the display,
- the grinder makes the beans too fine and forms a coffee puck that is too compact,
- the machine makes unusual noises — hissing, gurgling, or a pulsing pump.
Technical causes
- Flow meter failure — the flow meter measures how much water passes through the circuit. When it fails, the machine does not register the flow and stops the brew cycle. This is the most common cause of an empty circuit on the DeLonghi ECAM 22.110, ECAM 350.55, and ECAM 44.660.
- Solenoid valves not working properly — solenoid valves direct the water flow inside the machine. They typically last about 2–3 years of heavy use. Once they fail, water never reaches the brew unit.
- Blocked brew unit — coffee residue, oils, and limescale form blockages in the brew unit and stop proper extraction.
- Pump failure — the ULKA pump does not build enough pressure. It should reach about 15 bar. A worn diaphragm or check valve is a frequent cause.
- Circuit blocked by scale — limescale settles in the pipes and the boiler and restricts water flow. This is especially common if hard water is not filtered.
- Grind that is too fine — a poorly calibrated grinder, or beans ground too finely, means the water cannot push through the coffee in the brew unit.
DeLonghi models affected by the fault
An empty circuit and an overly fine grind show up most often on these models:
- DeLonghi Magnifica S (ECAM 22.110, ECAM 22.360) — popular, more affordable models with a ceramic grinder,
- DeLonghi Dinamica (ECAM 350.55, ECAM 370.95) — flow meter problems usually appear after 2–3 years of use,
- DeLonghi Eletta Explore (ECAM 450.65, ECAM 452.57) — the advanced electronics are sensitive to a blocked circuit,
- DeLonghi PrimaDonna (ECAM 650.85, ECAM 550.75) — premium models in which the solenoid valves work under a heavier load,
- DeLonghi ESAM (3000, 4000, 6600) — older series with metal grinders, prone to limescale buildup.
Can you repair it yourself?
Some steps are worth trying at home, but most of this fault needs a workshop:
- Yes — do it yourself: adjust the grind size with the knob on the grinder, rinse the brew unit under running water, and run a descaling cycle.
- No — needs a service visit: replacing the flow meter, repairing or replacing the solenoid valves, replacing the pump, and diagnosing the control electronics.
Trying to replace the flow meter or the solenoid valves yourself, without the right tools and know-how, can flood the electronics and turn a simple job into a much more expensive repair.
How we repair it at AGD Group
At the AGD Group workshop in Lodz, empty-circuit diagnosis follows these steps:
- We check pump pressure with a service pressure gauge — the normal range is 12–15 bar.
- We test the flow meter and the solenoid valves with a multimeter and an oscilloscope.
- We check that the pipes are clear and inspect the brew unit.
- We check grinder calibration and the grind size.
- Once the cause is clear, we replace the faulty parts with original DeLonghi components.
- We run a brew test and check the quality of the drink.
Repair cost
Guide prices for an empty-circuit repair at the AGD Group workshop in Lodz:
- Diagnosis — 70 PLN (included in the repair cost when you book the job),
- Flow meter replacement — from 180 PLN (part and labor),
- Solenoid valve replacement — from 160 PLN,
- Professional descaling — from 120 PLN,
- Pump replacement — from 220 PLN.
The exact quote depends on the machine model and how much work is needed. We always tell you the cost before we start.
Prevention
A few habits help you avoid an empty circuit on a DeLonghi coffee machine:
- Use filtered water, or fit an original DeLonghi filter in the tank.
- Descale every 2–3 months with original DeLonghi EcoDecalk.
- Rinse the brew unit under running water every week and lubricate the guides.
- Do not set the grinder to the finest setting — positions 3–5 are the right range.
- Use only original water filters and descaling products — non-original ones can damage the plastic parts of the circuit.
- Bring the machine in for a professional service once a year.
