Signs of a Nivona brewing-unit problem

The brewing unit on Nivona CafeRomatica machines can be removed and cleaned at home. Once the drive mechanism or the guides wear out, though, typical warning signs appear:

  • The machine displays "Insert brewing unit" even though the unit is fitted correctly
  • Brewing stops halfway — the coffee is not fully brewed
  • The brewing unit does not move into the brew position — you hear clicking or a hum from the drive motor
  • Coffee leaks under pressure from the sides of the brewing unit instead of flowing into the cup
  • The machine does not grind and goes straight to rinsing
  • The brewing unit jams and cannot be removed from the chamber

Any of these symptoms means the brewing mechanism needs a check. Sometimes the cause is worn seals, and sometimes a failed drive or distorted plastic guides.

How to free a stuck brewing unit in a Nivona?

If the brewing unit is stuck in the chamber, do not pull it out by force — you can damage the guides and the position microswitches. Here is the procedure:

  1. Unplug the machine and wait 30 seconds
  2. Switch it back on — the machine should run an initialization cycle and move the brewing unit to the removal position
  3. If the cycle fails, open the side service flap (models 7xx-10xx) and turn the drive gear by hand
  4. Once the brewing unit is out, check that no coffee residue inside the chamber is blocking the mechanism

If the unit still will not release after two attempts, it needs a service repair. Forcing it out can crack the brewing-unit arms or damage the drive spindle.

Most common causes of brewing-unit failure

From repairs carried out in our workshop, these are the main causes of brewing-unit problems on Nivona machines:

  • Worn drive gear — the plastic drive gear loses its teeth after 4-6 years of heavy use. The brewing unit no longer reaches the brew position.
  • Deformed guides — taking the unit out and putting it back regularly wears the guide rails, so the brewing unit no longer positions itself correctly.
  • Seized piston — coffee deposits and oils block the piston inside the brewing unit. The machine cannot compress the coffee puck.
  • Damaged seals — hardened or cracked O-rings let water leak out under pressure instead of flowing through the puck.
  • Drive motor failure — less often, the DC motor that drives the mechanism wears out or loses power.
  • Position microswitches — the sensors that detect the presence and position of the brewing unit can corrode or suffer mechanical damage.

Nivona models most often affected by brewing-unit problems

A brewing-unit problem can appear on any Nivona CafeRomatica, but statistically these are the machines we see most often:

  • Nivona CafeRomatica 520 (NICR 520) — an entry-level model where owners often skip regular cleaning of the brewing unit
  • Nivona CafeRomatica 670 (NICR 670) — a popular mid-range model; the drive gear wears out after 3-4 years of daily use
  • Nivona CafeRomatica 756 (NICR 756) — specific guides that need precise alignment
  • Nivona CafeRomatica 790 (NICR 790) — frequent leaks past the seals under heavy use
  • Nivona CafeRomatica 820 (NICR 820) — a more advanced drive with a larger number of moving parts
  • Nivona CafeRomatica 960 (NICR 960) — a premium model where a drive failure needs specialist parts
  • Nivona CafeRomatica 1030 (NICR 1030) — the flagship model with a fully electronic drive

How we repair a Nivona brewing unit at AGD Group

At our workshop in Lodz, brewing-unit repair follows a set procedure:

  1. Diagnosis — we check the drive, guides, microswitches, and the brewing unit. We test brew pressure and the seal of the whole circuit.
  2. Disassembly and cleaning — we take the brewing unit apart and remove coffee deposits and oils from the piston, springs, and guides.
  3. Replacement of worn parts — we replace the drive gear, seals, return springs, and guides with new original parts or high-quality replacements.
  4. Lubrication and calibration — we lubricate the moving parts with silicone grease made for coffee machines and calibrate the brewing-unit position.
  5. Final test — we run at least 10 brew cycles, checking extraction, that there are no leaks, and that the display is correct.

Repair usually takes 3-5 working days. Courier shipping across Poland — we collect the machine and return it at our expense.

Caring for a Nivona brewing unit

To extend the life of the brewing unit and avoid costly repairs:

  • Remove and rinse the brewing unit at least once a week — under running water, with no detergent. Let it dry completely before you fit it back.
  • Once a month, clean the brewing unit with a Nivona NICT 700 cleaning tablet or a similar one (start the cleaning program in the machine menu).
  • Use a medium grind — coffee ground too fine clogs the piston and the brewing-unit filter sooner.
  • Do not use coffee with additives (caramelized or flavored) — the oils and sugars stick to the mechanism.
  • Grease the guides with silicone grease every 2-3 months — it protects against seizing and corrosion in the slots.
  • Do not remove the brewing unit while the machine is running — always switch it off first and wait until the rinse cycle has finished.

Regular maintenance keeps your Nivona machine working reliably for many years. If you have any questions, write to us — we will gladly advise you on what to do.
