Descaling Philips EP coffee machines — why it matters

Scale is the biggest enemy of any coffee machine. Limescale builds up in the thermoblock, the pump and the water circuit, lowering water temperature, pressure and coffee quality. Philips EP machines have the AquaClean system — a smart water filter that significantly delays the need for descaling. Even with an AquaClean filter, descaling is still essential. At AGD Group in Lodz we professionally descale every Philips EP model — from the EP1220 to the EP5540.

The AquaClean system — how the Philips filter works

The AquaClean filter is a patented Philips solution that cuts scale build-up by up to 80%. It sits in the water tank and must be activated after every replacement.

  • Filter life — the manufacturer claims up to 5000 cups (about 3 months of heavy use).
  • Filter replacement — a display indicator tells you when to change it. Filter cost: about 30-40 PLN.
  • Filter activation — after fitting a new filter, activate it in the machine menu (hold the AquaClean button for 3 seconds).
  • Without activation — the machine does not know the filter is fitted and counts descaling on the standard schedule (about every 250 cups instead of about every 5000).

Important: The AquaClean filter does NOT remove the need for descaling — it only delays it. Even with a filter in constant use, the machine will need descaling over time.

Philips EP descaling procedure — step by step

A correct Philips descaling cycle takes about 30-45 minutes and the steps must be followed closely:

  1. Preparation — remove the AquaClean filter from the tank. Fill with water to the MAX level. Add the descaler (a full pack of Philips CA6700 or an equivalent).
  2. Starting the cycle — in the machine menu select "Descaling" (the scale icon). On the 2200 series: hold the espresso and cappuccino buttons together for 3 seconds.
  3. Descaling phase — the machine runs the solution through the system. The whole phase takes about 20 minutes. Place a large container under the spout (at least 1 liter).
  4. Rinsing — when the descaling phase ends, the machine asks you to fill the tank with clean water. Rinsing takes about 10 minutes.
  5. Finish — the machine confirms the cycle is complete. Fit a new AquaClean filter and activate it.

Common Philips descaling problems

The machine does not finish the descaling cycle

This is the most common problem for Philips EP owners. The machine starts descaling, then stops partway through or goes back to the start. Causes:

  • Blocked flow — scale has clogged the system so badly that the solution cannot pass through. The machine needs to be taken apart and descaled by hand in the workshop.
  • Faulty flow sensor — the machine does not detect water flow and aborts the procedure.
  • Not enough water in the tank — the tank must be filled to MAX.
  • Software fault — some EP2200 models need a factory reset.

The descaling indicator stays on after the procedure

A frequent issue, especially on the EP2220 and the EP2230:

  • The procedure was not finished — run it again from the start.
  • The machine needs an extra rinse cycle.
  • An electronic fault — a reset or a firmware update is required.

Which descaler should you use for Philips?

Philips recommends its own CA6700 descaler (citric acid and lactic acid). Alternatives:

  • Original Philips CA6700 — the best match for the descaling algorithm. Cost: about 35-45 PLN for 2 doses.
  • Durgol Swiss Espresso — a professional descaler based on sulfamic acid. Very effective and safe for aluminum thermoblocks.
  • Descaling tablets — they must be made for automatic coffee machines, not for kettles.
  • Citric acid (food grade) — it works, but less well than professional products. Concentration: 10-15 g per liter of water.
  • NEVER vinegar — it damages rubber seals and metal parts.

Professional descaling at the AGD Group workshop

When descaling at home does not help, or the machine gets stuck mid-cycle, it is time for a workshop. At AGD Group we offer:

  • Thermoblock removal — hand descaling in solution for several hours.
  • Pump cleaning — removing deposits from the check valve and the piston.
  • Sensor inspection — checking the flow sensor and the thermistor.
  • Pressure test — checking that the pump reaches the correct pressure after the work (9-12 bar).
  • Indicator reset — clearing the descaling alert in the software.

Philips EP descaling schedule

  • With an AquaClean filter — descale every 6-12 months (depends on water hardness).
  • Without a filter — every 1-3 months (the machine will prompt you).
  • Hard water (above 15°dH) — more frequent treatment, even if you have a filter.
  • Soft water (below 8°dH) — less frequent descaling, and the AquaClean filter is replaced less often.

Workshop descaling prices

  • Professional descaling — from 80 PLN
  • Descaling with thermoblock removal — from 150 PLN
  • Thermoblock replacement (when scale has caused a perforation) — from 350 PLN
  • Flow sensor replacement — from 120 PLN
  • Electronic reset — from 70 PLN

Every repair comes with a 3-month warranty. Courier collection is available across Poland.

How to avoid scale problems

Regular care helps you avoid expensive repairs:

  • Use an AquaClean filter and replace it when the indicator asks.
  • Do not ignore the descaling message — run the procedure straight away.
  • Use filtered water (a jug with a carbon filter) instead of tap water.
  • Set the correct water hardness in the machine menu (measure it with the test strip from the Philips kit).
  • Book a service inspection once a year — a professional check catches the problem before it gets out of hand.
