Water leak in a Philips coffee machine — causes and diagnosis
A water leak is one of the most common problems reported by owners of Philips EP coffee machines. A puddle under the machine, a drip tray that fills faster than usual, drops of water on the counter — these are signs you should not ignore. Water in contact with the electronics can cause costly damage to the main board. At AGD Group in Lodz we repair leaks on every Philips model — from the EP2220 to the EP5540.
Most common leak sources in Philips coffee machines
1. Brew group seals
The brew group (brewing unit) in Philips EP machines is a removable part — you can take it out yourself for cleaning. Over time the O-ring seals around the group harden, crack or lose their elasticity. The result: water seeps around the brew group and collects at the bottom of the machine. The EP2220/10 and the EP2230/10 are especially prone to this after 2-3 years of use. Brew group seal replacement: from 120 PLN.
2. Water tank — cracks and the valve
The water tank on Philips machines is fitted on the side or at the back of the unit. The most common problems:
- Cracked tank — micro-cracks form after a drop or from long-term use. Water leaks slowly and pools under the machine.
- Damaged tank valve — the valve in the base of the tank seals the connection to the machine. A worn valve seal leaks when you insert or remove the tank.
- Incorrect seating — the tank must click into place. If it is not seated properly, the joint will leak.
3. Thermoblock (flow-through heater)
The thermoblock is the heating element that brings water up to brewing temperature (90-96°C). In Philips EP machines the thermoblock is made of aluminum. Thermoblock faults that lead to leaks:
- Internal corrosion — scale builds up on the walls and, over time, causes micro-perforations. This is common in hard-water areas, especially when descaling is skipped.
- Cracked connections — the silicone hoses that join the thermoblock to the rest of the hydraulic circuit can loosen or split.
- Damaged thermoblock seal — the housing has to come off, and the seal is replaced in the workshop.
Thermoblock repair: from 200 PLN. Thermoblock replacement: from 350 PLN.
4. Hydraulic circuit — hoses and fittings
A Philips machine uses a network of silicone hoses that connect the tank, the pump, the thermoblock, the brew group and the spouts. Over time you get:
- Fittings that work loose from vibration
- Hoses that harden and crack (especially next to the thermoblock, where it gets hot)
- Spring clamps that lose their grip
5. Pressure pump
The ULKA pump in Philips machines runs at up to 15 bar. When its seals fail, water leaks under pressure — you will see drops while the machine is making coffee. Pump replacement: from 200 PLN.
Leaks by Philips series
2200 series (EP2220, EP2230, EP2235)
Leaks most often start at the brew group seals and the tank valve. The hydraulic layout is simpler, so the repair is easier. Typical cost to stop a leak: from 120 PLN.
3200 and 4300 series (EP3240, EP3340, EP4340)
On these models the LatteGo system can leak as well — specifically where the milk container meets the steam spout. Milk system repair: from 150 PLN.
5400 series (EP5440, EP5540)
These models are built for demanding users and have a more complex hydraulic circuit. They most often leak because of thermoblock damage — skipped descaling is the main cause. The repair costs more because the control electronics are more expensive: from 200 PLN.
What to do when a Philips machine is leaking
- Unplug the machine — water and electricity are a dangerous combination.
- Remove the water tank and check it for cracks.
- Remove the brew group — inspect the seals (they should be soft, with no cracks).
- Check the drip tray — a stuck float can trigger a false leak warning.
- Do not brew coffee until you have found and fixed the cause of the leak.
Cost of leak repairs on Philips coffee machines
- Diagnostics — 70 PLN (included in the repair cost)
- Brew group seal replacement — from 120 PLN
- Tank valve repair or replacement — from 100 PLN
- Hydraulic hose replacement — from 150 PLN

Every repair comes with a 3-month warranty. Courier shipping is available across Poland.
Prevention — how to stop leaks
- Regular descaling — every 2-3 months, or when the AquaClean indicator asks. This protects the thermoblock from corrosion.
- Brew group cleaning — once a week, take it out, rinse it under running water and let it dry.
- Seal lubrication — once a month, apply a little silicone grease to the brew group seals.
- AquaClean filter — reduces scale build-up in the thermoblock.
- Annual service check — a professional inspection of every seal and connection: from 150 PLN.
