Philips EP coffee machine maintenance

Regular cleaning is the best way to extend the life of a coffee machine and keep drinks tasting as they should. Philips EP series machines — from the EP2220 to the EP5540 — need several important parts cleaned and serviced on a regular schedule. Philips EP maintenance plan

Every day

• Empty the drip tray and the grounds container — do not wait for the machine to prompt you. Wet grounds spoil quickly and start to smell.
• Rinse the LatteGo system (if you use it) — after every milk drink, start the automatic rinse. On the 5400 series the machine does this on its own; on the 3200 series you confirm it on the display.
• Wipe the coffee spout — use a damp cloth to remove coffee residue from the nozzles.

Every week

• Remove and wash the brew group — this is the most important weekly job. Open the service door, take the group out, rinse it under running water with no detergent, dry it, and put it back.
• Wash the water tank — take it out, wash it in warm water with a little dish soap, and rinse it well.
• Clean the LatteGo container — split it into two parts, wash it by hand or on the top rack of the dishwasher, at no more than 65°C.
• Wipe the housing — use a soft damp cloth, with no abrasive cleaners.

Every month

• Grease the brew group seals — apply a little silicone grease from a Philips kit to the brew group's O-rings. This keeps the group sealed and moving smoothly.
• Run the automatic cleaning cycle — in the machine menu, select "Cleaning". The machine flushes hot water through the circuit and removes oil deposits.
• Check the AquaClean filter — if it is nearing the replacement limit, have a new one ready.

Every 3 months

• Use Philips CA6704 cleaning tablets — they dissolve coffee fats and oils that settle in the coffee circuit (brew group and internal channels). Drop a tablet into the pre-ground coffee compartment and start the cleaning cycle.
• Clean the bean hopper — empty leftover beans, vacuum the hopper, and wipe it with a dry cloth. Oil residue on the walls can block the chute to the grinder.
• Check the grinder adjustment — the knob under the hopper should turn smoothly. If it is hard to turn, the grinder needs cleaning.

Every 6 months (or when the indicator says so)

• Replace the AquaClean filter — activate the new filter in the machine menu by holding the AquaClean button for 3 seconds. The machine has to register that a new filter is installed.
• Descale the machine — use original Philips CA6700 descaler or Durgol Swiss Espresso. The full procedure takes about 30 minutes.

Once a year — service inspection

• Thermoblock removal and cleaning — we remove scale that a home descaling cycle cannot clear.
• Seal and hose inspection — we replace worn seals before they start to leak.
• Pressure calibration — we check that the pump reaches the correct pressure (9-12 bar).
• Lubrication of the mechanisms — brew group, guides, and gears.
• Full function test — brewing, frothing, descaling, and grinding.

Philips AquaClean filter — what you need to know

The AquaClean filter is one of the most useful features on a Philips coffee machine. It reduces scale build-up, improves the taste of the water, and lengthens the time between descaling cycles.

• Compatibility — the filter fits every Philips EP machine with a socket in the tank (800, 1200, 2200, 3200, 4300, and 5400 series).
• Replacement — the manufacturer recommends every 3 months or after 5,000 cups. If you drink 1-2 coffees a day, the filter will last much longer.
• Activation is required — after fitting a new filter, always activate it in the menu. Skip this step and the machine will schedule descaling every 250 cups instead of every 5,000.
• Price — about 30-40 PLN each. A pack of three filters is about 80-100 PLN.
• Before first use — soak the filter in cold water for 5 minutes, shake it, and place it in the tank.

Philips CA6704 cleaning tablets

CA6704 tablets are the dedicated Philips cleaner for the coffee circuit (do not confuse them with descaler). They dissolve coffee oil deposits that collect in the brew group, the spouts, and the internal channels.

• How often — every 3 months, or when the "CoffeeFat Clean" message appears (on newer models).
• Procedure — place a tablet in the pre-ground coffee compartment and select "Cleaning" in the menu. The cycle takes about 15 minutes.
• Alternatives — Cafiza by Urnex (tablets for automatic machines). Never use dishwasher tablets.
• Price — about 25-35 PLN for a pack of 6 tablets.

Cleaning the LatteGo system

The LatteGo system needs extra care, because milk is an ideal place for bacteria to grow:

1. After every use — start the automatic rinse. Remove the container and pour out any leftover milk.
2. Every day — split the container into two parts (container plus nozzle cap). Wash it in warm water with detergent, or put it in the dishwasher.
3. Every week — soak the nozzle cap in warm water with detergent for 15-20 minutes. Clean the channels with the small brush supplied with the machine.
4. Do not leave milk in the container — after the last drink of the day, pour out the leftover milk and wash the container.

• Repairs on a neglected machine: from 200 PLN (seals) to 700+ PLN (thermoblock and electronics).

A Philips EP machine serviced on a regular schedule runs for 7-10 years. Neglect it, and a serious fault often shows up after 3-4 years.
