The grinder is the heart of every automatic coffee machine — coffee taste depends on grind quality. Nivona CafeRomatica machines use two grinder types: ceramic burrs on entry-level and mid-range models, and steel burrs in the Aroma Balance system on premium models. At AGD Group we specialize in repairing and rebuilding both types of Nivona grinders.
Types of grinders in Nivona machines
Unlike many manufacturers, Nivona uses both ceramic and steel burrs, depending on the model class:
- Ceramic burrs — fitted to CafeRomatica 5xx and 6xx series models. They run quietly, do not corrode, and wear more slowly. Trouble starts when a hard foreign object gets into the grinder, such as a stone or a piece of dried fruit — the burrs can then crack.
- Steel burrs (Aroma Balance System) — fitted to 7xx, 8xx, 9xx and 10xx series models. They grind more precisely and more consistently. They stand up better to impacts, but they dull faster under heavy use and can rust in a damp environment.
The Aroma Balance system on premium Nivona models lets you set aroma intensity from the display. Mechanically, it is a precision grinder with steel burrs.
Signs of a Nivona grinder fault
A grinder problem is fairly easy to recognize. Watch for the symptoms below:
- Unusual noise while grinding — scraping, squeaking or a loud knock points to worn burrs, a foreign object in the grinder, or a damaged drive
- Uneven grind — the coffee is partly fine and partly coarse. That leads to uneven extraction and unpleasant coffee
- The machine does not grind coffee — the motor runs (you can hear it), but the beans are not drawn in or are not ground
- Grind too fine — even on a coarser setting the coffee is ground too finely. Brewing slows down and the coffee tastes bitter
- Grind too coarse — the coffee is watery and lacking aroma, even on the finest setting
- "Adjust grinder" message — on some Nivona models with Aroma Balance the machine itself detects a calibration problem
- Coffee with no crema — a missing creamy layer on the espresso is often the result of a grind that is too coarse, or of worn burrs
Most common causes of grinder failure
From our workshop experience, the most common causes of Nivona grinder faults are:
- Natural burr wear — ceramic burrs last about 20,000-30,000 grind cycles, steel burrs about 10,000-15,000. After that they lose sharpness and precision.
- Foreign objects in the grinder — stones, pieces of dried fruit or chunks of caramelized coffee can damage the burrs or jam the mechanism.
- Oiled and flavored coffees — oils from flavored and dark-roasted coffees build up on the burrs, gum up the mechanism and make adjustment difficult.
- Drive motor wear — after years of heavy use the grinder motor loses power. The grinder runs more slowly, and changing the grind setting becomes harder.
- Damaged adjustment mechanism — the grind dial on a Nivona works by moving the upper burr. The mechanism can seize or break.
- Moisture in the bean hopper — storing the machine in a damp place, or pouring in wet beans, makes the coffee swell and block the grinder.
Nivona will not grind coffee — what to do
If your Nivona has stopped grinding coffee, check a few things before you bring it in:
- Check the bean hopper — make sure there are coffee beans in it and that the lid is closed properly. Nivona has a lid sensor.
- Clean the hopper — empty the beans, wipe the hopper with a dry cloth, and check the bottom for stuck residue or foreign objects.
- Check the grind adjustment — the dial on the bean hopper should turn smoothly. If it is stuck, do not force it.
- Run a grind with no beans — remove the beans, start a brew and listen for the grinder motor. If it runs, the fault is in bean feeding, not in the motor itself.
Important: On Nivona machines, change the grind setting only while the grinder is running. Changing it with the machine switched off can damage the mechanism.
Grind adjustment on a Nivona
The Nivona CafeRomatica has a physical grind dial on the coffee bean hopper. This is typical of Nivona and sets it apart from brands that adjust the grind electronically.
The dial usually offers 5 settings (depending on the model):
- Setting 1 (finest) — for a strong espresso with thick crema
- Setting 3 (medium) — an all-purpose setting for most coffees
- Setting 5 (coarsest) — for milder, less intense coffees
Change the setting by one step at a time and brew 2-3 coffees before you judge the result. The grinder needs a few cycles for the new setting to settle.
Nivona models with frequent grinder problems
Figures from our workshop show these models coming in most often with grinder faults:
- CafeRomatica 6xx — models with ceramic burrs. The most common fault is cracked burrs from a foreign object, or natural wear after 4-5 years.
- CafeRomatica 7xx — transitional models, some with ceramic burrs and some with steel. Problems with grind adjustment.
- CafeRomatica 8xx/9xx — models with the Aroma Balance system and steel burrs. Electronic calibration problems, and steel burr wear under heavy use in offices or hospitality.

Prevention — how to look after a Nivona grinder
- Do not use oiled or flavored coffee — the oils settle on the burrs and disrupt grinding. Use only plain whole-bean coffee with no additives.
- Clean the bean hopper regularly — every 2-4 weeks, empty the beans, wipe the hopper with a dry cloth and check for stuck residue.
- Do not adjust the grind with the machine off — change the grind setting only while the grinder is running, so the mechanism stays intact.
- Keep the beans dry — do not pour wet beans into the hopper, and do not expose the machine directly to steam.
- Use cleaning tablets — every 2-3 months run a cleaning cycle with tablets made for automatic coffee machines.
