Descaling a Melitta coffee machine — why it matters
Limescale is one of the biggest enemies of automatic coffee machines. In Melitta machines the water-heating system — the thermoblock — is especially sensitive to lime deposits. Regular descaling extends the life of the machine, keeps the brew temperature steady and preserves the full flavor of the coffee. The manufacturer recommends descaling every 2-3 months at average water hardness, and in hard-water areas (above 14°dH, such as Lodz) as often as once a month.
What does the descaling symbol on the display mean?
Melitta machines with a display (for example the Caffeo CI E970, Barista TS Smart F85 and LatteSelect F630) show the message "CALC" or an icon of a droplet with limescale when the built-in cup counter reaches the set threshold. Models without a display (Caffeo Solo E950, Purista F230) signal that descaling is due with a flashing LED — usually orange or red. Ignoring this signal leads to an overheated thermoblock, a drop in pressure and, in the end, a costly repair.
How to descale a Melitta coffee machine, step by step
- Prepare the descaler — dissolve a Melitta Anti Calc tablet in 500 ml of lukewarm water, or use Melitta descaling liquid (at the ratio given on the pack).
- Pour the solution into the tank — remove the water filter (if one is fitted) and pour the prepared solution into the water tank.
- Start the descaling program — on models with a display, go to Settings → Maintenance → Descaling. On the Caffeo Solo, hold the descaling button for 3 seconds.
- Wait for the cycle to finish — the program runs the solution through the thermoblock, the pump and the nozzles. It takes 20-30 minutes, depending on the model.
- Rinse — when the cycle finishes, fill the tank with clean water and run the rinse cycle 2-3 times until the water is clear and odor-free.
- Fit the filter — if you use a Melitta Pro Aqua filter, insert a new one or reset the counter on the old one.
Melitta Anti Calc tablets vs alternatives
The manufacturer recommends Melitta Anti Calc only — tablets based on citric and sulfamic acid, made specifically for Melitta thermoblocks. A pack of 4 tablets costs about 25-35 PLN. Alternative descalers (for example Durgol or EcoDecalk) can be used, but if you do not keep the right concentration, you risk damaging the silicone seals. Never use vinegar — it corrodes the aluminum parts of the thermoblock and leaves a lasting aftertaste.
Melitta will not finish the descaling program — causes
One of the most common problems reported in our workshop is a Melitta machine that hangs during descaling or does not finish the program. Several causes are possible:
- Blocked thermoblock — scale has blocked the water flow and the pump cannot push the solution through. It needs manual cleaning or a thermoblock replacement.
- Faulty ULKA pump — the diaphragm wears out after 3-5 years. The pump does not build enough pressure.
- Dirty flow sensors — the flowmeter does not detect water flow, so the system waits indefinitely.
- Electronics fault — older Caffeo Solo models can have problems on the control board.
What happens if you skip regular descaling
- Lower coffee temperature — a layer of scale insulates the heater and the coffee comes out lukewarm
- Slower brewing — extraction time stretches from 25 to 40+ seconds
- Louder pump — the pump works under a heavier load
- Thermoblock failure — overheating and cracking; replacement from 350 PLN
- Blocked brewing unit — scale on the seals jams the mechanism
Melitta models — how often to descale
Based on our workshop experience:
- Caffeo Solo E950 / Purista F230 — these models need descaling most often. A simpler thermoblock design lets scale build up faster. With hard water, descale every 4-6 weeks.
- Caffeo CI E970 / CI Touch F630 — the extra milk circuit gives scale a larger surface to settle on. Descale every 6-8 weeks.
- Barista TS Smart F85 — an advanced system with a double container needs regular descaling. Every 8 weeks.
- Avanza F270 — a compact model with a milk container; descale every 6-8 weeks.
- LatteSelect F630 — a dual-chamber milk system; every 6-8 weeks.
Professional descaling at AGD Group
When the descaling program brings no result, or the machine keeps showing a message that descaling is required, it is worth handing the machine to a specialist. At AGD Group:
- Thermoblock condition check — assessment of scale buildup, plus a pressure and flow test (from 70 PLN)
- Professional descaling — chemical and mechanical cleaning of the thermoblock, pump and valves (from 120 PLN)
- Thermoblock replacement — if scale has damaged the heater or the seals (from 350 PLN)
- Pump replacement — when a worn diaphragm no longer provides the right pressure (from 200 PLN)
Courier shipping across Poland — from 20 PLN one way (40 PLN both ways). The repair takes 3-7 business days, depending on the queue. The service is covered by a 3-month warranty.
How to prevent scale buildup
- Fit a Melitta Pro Aqua filter — replace it every 2 months
- Use filtered water (a jug with a carbon filter)
- Set the correct water hardness in the machine menu
- Do not ignore descaling messages
- Have the machine serviced once a year
