Melitta grinder repair — specialist service in Lodz

The grinder is one of the most important parts of an automatic coffee machine. Taste, aroma and crema all depend on grind quality. Melitta machines use two types of grinders — with steel burrs and with ceramic burrs — and each needs a different service approach.

At AGD Group in Lodz we repair grinders in every Melitta Caffeo model. We replace burrs, repair the motor, and clean and calibrate the grinder. We serve customers across Poland — you can send the machine in by courier.

Types of grinders in Melitta machines

Melitta fits its machines with different grinders — the choice depends on the model and the price range:

  • Conical steel burrs — fitted in the Melitta Caffeo Solo (E950) and Caffeo CI (E970). They are solid and efficient, but they dull over time and need replacing. They usually last about 8,000-12,000 cups.
  • Ceramic burrs — used in the newer Melitta Barista TS Smart (F85) and Barista T Smart (F83). They resist corrosion better and stay sharp longer, but they are more brittle — they can crack if a foreign object gets into the grinder (a small stone or an under-roasted bean).
  • Compact grinders — the Melitta Purista (F230) and Avanza (F270) use miniaturized steel grinders with 3-5 grind settings.

Signs of a damaged Melitta grinder

Grinder problems show up straight away in the coffee. These are the most common signs:

  • Loud, unusual running — the grinder makes metallic noises, a scraping sound or a squeal. That can mean worn burrs, a foreign object or damaged bearings.
  • The grinder does not grind the coffee — the motor runs, but the beans are not ground. Cause: jammed burrs, a damaged feed mechanism or a burnt-out motor.
  • Grind too fine or too coarse — the adjustment has no effect, or the machine grinds unevenly. Worn burrs lose their edge and no longer work properly.
  • "Error 8" message — on Melitta machines this error code points to grinder problems.
  • Coffee with no crema — a grind that is too coarse lets the water pass through too quickly, so crema does not form.
  • Watery, weak coffee — even with the right amount of beans, the coffee lacks strength and aroma.

How do you adjust the grind on a Melitta coffee machine?

Before you book a service visit, try adjusting the grind yourself. On Melitta machines the adjustment knob sits under the bean hopper lid:

  1. Open the lid of the bean hopper.
  2. Find the adjustment knob (round, marked from "fine" to "coarse").
  3. Important: Adjust the grind only while the grinder is running — turn the knob while the machine is grinding coffee.
  4. Turn the knob one position toward "fine" (to the left) — the coffee will be stronger, with better crema.
  5. Brew 2-3 cups before you judge the result — the machine needs time to settle on the new setting.

If the adjustment makes no difference, the problem may be worn burrs or the adjustment mechanism — and a service repair is then needed.

Melitta models — how the grinders differ

  • Melitta Caffeo Solo (E950) — one steel grinder with 3 adjustment levels. This is the model we see most often in the workshop. Typical problem: the burrs wear out after 3-4 years of use.
  • Melitta Caffeo CI (E970) — a steel grinder with the AromaticSystem. It allows more precise grind adjustment than the Solo.
  • Melitta Barista TS Smart (F85) — ceramic burrs with 5 adjustment levels. Two bean hoppers, but one grinder. Problem: the burrs can crack if a hard foreign object falls in.
  • Melitta Barista T Smart (F83) — the grinder is built the same way as on the Barista TS Smart.
  • Melitta Purista (F230) — a compact grinder with 5 levels. Because of the simpler design, how far you can adjust it yourself is limited.
  • Melitta Avanza (F270) — a grinder with specifications close to the Purista. An added advantage is the option to use pre-ground coffee through the bypass chute.
  • Melitta LatteSelect (F630) — an advanced grinder with automatic dose calibration.

How we repair a Melitta grinder at AGD Group

  1. Diagnostics (from 70 PLN) — we remove the machine housing and assess the grinder. We test the motor and measure the current. We check the burrs for wear and any mechanical damage.
  2. Grinder cleaning — we remove old coffee oils, small stones and dirt. We clean the feed channels and the grinding chamber.
  3. Burr replacement — we fit new steel or ceramic burrs, depending on the model. After replacement we calibrate the grind on a test bench.
  4. Motor repair or replacement — if the motor has burnt out or is worn, we fit a new one with the same specifications.
  5. Final test — we grind test coffee at different settings, assess the coffee and check the noise level.

Cost of Melitta grinder repair

  • Diagnostics — 70 PLN (a fixed fee, included in the repair cost)
  • Grinder cleaning — from 80 PLN
  • Steel burr replacement — from 160 PLN
  • Ceramic burr replacement — from 180 PLN
  • Grinder motor replacement — from 200 PLN

Prevention — how to extend grinder life

  • Use fresh medium-roast beans — dark roasts release more oils, which build up on the burrs
  • Clean the bean hopper regularly — old, rancid beans spoil the taste of the coffee and dirty the grinder
  • Do not pour ground coffee into the bean hopper — it can jam the grinder
  • Avoid beans with additives, such as flavored coffee — sugar and flavorings stick to the burrs
  • Every 200-300 cups, use grinder cleaning tablets
